1954 yılında Beyrut'ta doğduğunda, deniz ticareti ailesinin genlerinde zaten vardı. Çocukluğu, limana yanaşan devasa yük gemilerini izleyerek, babasının ardiyelerindeki gümrük evrakları ve Akdeniz'in iyot kokusu arasında geçti.
